At night, while talking about the campaign, he accused his rival of using “fake news” and carrying out “attacks” against him during the second round.

– We have a clear conscience that we had a beautiful, clean campaign, different from our opponent, who began the second round looking like another candidate, someone else, with a campaign based on aggression, fake news and fundamentalist arguments, even that they tried to bring. the illusion of the people about my image, putting the faith of the people in the middle – Marília accused in her speech.

Funded by former President Lula to run for office, despite the PT in Pernambuco, which preferred an alliance with the PSB, Marília spoke about the next steps after the result.

– A new articulation of the opposition will begin in Pernambuco. We cannot articulate with a group that not only does so badly in management, but also treats politics as it did now. We will responsibly oppose.

The dispute between the cousins was plagued with direct attacks in the final stretch. Marília publicly questioned whether João’s election would mean that the city government would be run by his mother, Renata Campos, the widow of former governor Eduardo Campos. João, in turn, pointed out that the cousin, as a councilor, tried to avoid reading the Bible during the sessions.

The attacks were also in the political arena. The PT highlighted the ongoing investigations against the current administration of Geraldo Júlio (PSB), one of João’s main supporters. The PSB candidate, in turn, invested heavily in antipetism, linking the acronym of the cousin with corruption, ignoring the alliance that existed between the two parties until very recently.

In the speech in which she admitted defeat, the PT candidate also highlighted the fact that a woman had reached the second round in Recife, hitherto unheard of.

– A woman had never reached the second round, and with that percentage of votes that we had. In the next elections, I want there to be more women in these spaces. I want my firmer and stronger stance, which my opponent sometimes calls arrogance, to inspire other women.

In a sign that the dispute will have consequences for the left in Pernambuco and the family, Marília had not even fulfilled the ritual of calling her cousin admitting defeat.
