Lionel Messi had everything ready. And it took 73 minutes. It was when he fired a shot from outside the area that Herrera was unable to defend and scored the fourth for Barcelona in a 4-0 win over Osasuna.. And the goal paid a special tribute from the Barcelona jersey 10 to the Diego Armando Maradona, who died last Wednesday, in Argentina.
With tranquility, Messi shared the joy of the goal with his teammates and, as soon as he left, he simply took off his Barça shirt, revealing one of Newell’s, a replica of the one Diego Armando Maradona used during seven games between October 1993 and January 1994.
Messi raised his arms with the shirt of the lepers, with the same advertising that Maradona wore, with the 10 on his back and, thus, paid his particular tribute to the ace who left us so special: the team they shared in Argentina. Messi, when he was a child, and Maradona, when he returned after his stint at Sevilla.
An ephemeral adventure that lasted three and a half months, but which, in history, shows that the two stars, in addition to the Argentine team, will go down in history for wearing the Barcelona and Newell shirts. Messi even saw Maradona play with the red and black jersey in front of Emelec.
It was Lionel’s intimate party, the end of a day in which Barça was totally dedicated to Maradona. To start with a photo that shows an old Barça shirt with the number 10 in the box at the Camp Nou.
The image of Maradona from the Barça era could be seen on the stadium screens, as he stood for a minute in silence with a crown placed on the grass.
Maradona, some 40 years ago, played for Barcelona and although this has largely been hidden in his sports career, he is still present at the Camp Nou. And no one better than Messi, his true heir, to pay him the best tribute.
