It is confirmed. Drivers will have a longer period to renew their national driver’s license (CNH). According to the State Department of Transit (DETRAN), the documents that expired in this year 2020 can be regularized as of 2021.
Until then, the measure was announced for the State of São Paulo. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the agency took some steps, including suspending services. Drivers caught with this pending weren’t even getting a ticket.
However, as of now, Detran has published a schedule for drivers to renew CNH. The renewal will take place as follows: the driver will have a period of 12 to rectify his situation:
- Whoever had the CNH expired in January of this year, for example, will be able to renew it in January 2021;
- Whoever has expired the CNH in February 2020, can renew it in February 2021;
- Whoever has expired the CNH in March 2020, can renew it in March 2021;
- and so on.
The same terms mentioned will apply to:
- Driving license (PPD); Y
- Authorization to drive moped (ACC).
Traffic offenses
DETRAN also released new measures regarding traffic violations committed between February 26 and November 30, 2020. According to the schedule, the limit will be ten months from the date the violation was committed.
That way:
- fines registered in March 2020 – notifications sent in January 2021;
- fines registered in April 2020 – notifications in February 2021;
- fines registered in May 2020 – notifications in March 2021;
- and so on.
Notifications that have already been issued are postponed until January 31, 2021:
- the deadlines for presenting a defense; Y
- driver’s indication and appeal after March 20, 2020.
It is worth mentioning that the deadlines will be valid for infractions that were committed until the end of November. In other words, the fines that are registered as of December 1 of this year will follow the normal terms defined in the Brazilian Traffic Code.
Transfer and licenses
The transfer of the car, for drivers who bought vehicles between February 19 and November 30, 2020, can be carried out until December 31.
Who bought a new vehicle in the same period, registration and license can be done until January 31, 2021.
