There are no more beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for patients with coronavirus in Rio de Janeiro. This Wednesday (25), the number of patients who need ICU beds in Covid-19 is already greater than the number of places in public hospitals in the city.

Some patients even wait more than 15 days for a transfer without proper care.

This Wednesday morning (24), 86 patients needed intensive care, but only 37 beds in the city were free. The City Council said that it suspended elective surgeries in the municipal network, and that this week it opened another 20 beds in Covid-19. (read below).

As of Wednesday (25), the city of Rio had more than 130,000 infected people and almost 13,000 deaths from coronavirus.

João Mello died on Tuesday (24), three days before his 59th birthday. The family says it was difficult to treat him when Covid symptoms worsened.

“Yesterday I buried my father because of Covid. We had to execute 3 Upas in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro for them to serve us. And we had to move to Duque de Caxias. Wear a mask, use alcohol because the disease has not disappeared ”, said the son, Klaus Frazão.

Also Tuesday, the state government announced massive population testing, eight months after the pandemic began.

The city is concentrating the tests on some basic health units, such as Olaria.

The Family Medicine Association said it did not have access to the tests, making it difficult to control the disease.

“In some parts of the city, not all, we only have the programming available for January. If we want to think, for example, of isolation strategies, based on the result of the nasal smear test, which is a possibility in some countries, we cannot ”, explains Gabriel Velloso.

Occupancy rate reaches 93%

At the Salgado Filho Hospital, in Méier, in the North Zone, 8 people are in the emergency room waiting for a place in the hospital. The worst problem is the lack of ICU beds.

According to the Rio City Council, occupancy is 93%. But in practice there is no more vacancy in the UCI in the SUS network of the capital.

This Wednesday morning (25), 86 patients needed intensive care, but only 37 beds in the city were free.

And more than 30 critically ill patients had yet to get a spot. Some have been waiting since the beginning of the month.

“There is no coordination. The equipment that was bought was mobilized in the field hospitals, which helped a lot, but those hospitals mainly run directly by the government have never been filled,” says Dr. Chrystina Barros.

In addition to the closure of field hospitals and the fire at the Federal Hospital of Bonsucesso, some hospitals have closed ICU beds due to coronavirus.

This is the case of the Clementino Fraga Filho Hospital, of the UFRJ. Of the 60 beds renovated by private companies to deal with the pandemic, only ten work.

The reason is the lack of doctors. The health teams were hired in agreement with the city. The money is provided by the federal government, but RJ1 sources say that the municipality has reduced the number of professionals.

What the UFRJ hospital and the town hall say

The management of the Clementino Fraga Filho Hospital said that there was a reduction in the number of beds due to coronavirus on day 1 due to the end of temporary contracts for health professionals.

But the City of Rio said it extended this agreement with the university until the end of the year.

The city also says that it suspended elective surgeries in the municipal network, and that this week it opened another 20 beds in Covid.

Rio lost half of his beds
