The Minister of Justice and Public Security, André Mendonça, is with Covid-19. The information was released by the ministry’s notice on Tuesday (24).
According to the folder team, Mendonça “is doing well and will remain isolated at home for the next few weeks.”
With the announcement, the number of ministers in the government of Jair Bolsonaro who received a positive diagnosis of the infection reaches 13. The president and the first lady, Michelle, also had the virus.
In addition to Mendonça, the following were infected:
- Eduardo Pazuello (Health)
- Luiz Eduardo Ramos (Secretary of Government)
- Augusto Heleno (Office of Institutional Security)
- Bento Albuquerque (Mines and Energy)
- Milton Ribeiro (Education)
- Onyx Lorenzoni (citizenship)
- Marcos Pontes (Science, Technology and Innovations)
- Wagner Rosário (Comptroller General of the Union)
- Braga Netto (Civil House)
- Jorge Oliveira (General Secretariat)
- Marcelo Álvaro Antônio (Tourism)
- Fábio Faria (Communications)
Brazil reaches 169.5 thousand deaths from Covid, with a moving average of 496 per day
In September, Mendonça was admitted for medical examinations after an illness during the night. At that time he was diagnosed with “acute myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle triggered, most of the time, by a viral process.”
The minister even underwent a catheterization, but the suspicion of heart attack was ruled out.
Brazilian researchers published on Monday (23) a study that warns of what they identified as the beginning of the second wave of the pandemic in the country. The study is signed by six experts, from five universities and research institutes.
Based on the number of cases and deaths from the Ministry of Health, they concluded that the peak of the disease in Brazil occurred from July to September. After that, there was a slump that lasted until early November.
Experts warn of what they see as the start of the second wave of the pandemic
The study states that “the situation in Brazil has deteriorated dramatically in the last two weeks, and the beginning of a second wave of case growth is already evident in almost all states, particularly worrying in the most populated regions of the country.”
In addition to the number of cases and deaths, the researchers took into account other indicators, such as the transmission rate of Covid-19, called the R Rate. Ideally, it should be below 1, but in practically all states the rate is below above 1.1. In Paraná, for example, the R rate is 1.5. In theory, this means that 100 infected people transmit the virus to 150 others.
According to the researchers, the indication that Brazil is resuming the increase in cases of contamination and death coincides with the relaxation of social isolation measures, giving the false feeling that the worst is over.
