The entrepreneur Abilio Diniz, member of the Boards of Directors of Carrefour Global and Carrefour Brazil, commented on the death of João Alberto Silveira Freitas Friday night, 20. In a series of posts on his Twitter account, he called it “a tragedy and an enormous brutality.”
The 40-year-old black man was beaten and killed by two security guards in a unit of the Carrefour supermarket in Porto Alegre on Thursday night. His death, on the eve of Black Awareness Day, sparked a series of protests against racism in several Brazilian cities.
Diniz, who is also a shareholder in the group, said he asked the company to work “tirelessly so that tragic events like this do not happen again in Brazil.” He also said that he wants to see Carrefour as a “transforming agent in the fight against structural racism in Brazil and in the world.” He said he was “deeply saddened and outraged” by the death and that he sympathized with the victim’s family.
In the same social network, he said that racism is “execrable and unacceptable” and must be fought “with all force.” “Tens of millions of Brazilians face attacks and enormous difficulties due to racism on a daily basis, and our country will not really move forward without this being effectively addressed,” he added.
