Paulo Henrique Machado died yesterday afternoon, a patient who lived for 51 years in the HC (Hospital das Clínicas) of USP (University of São Paulo), located in the center of the city of São Paulo. Paulo had lived in the hospital since 1969 after contracting polio as a baby and had to remain in medical care due to the after-effects of the disease. The cause of death was not reported.

Two weeks ago, Paulo had posted a live broadcast on his YouTube channel with the title “Despite everything, we are alive!” In it, the patient says that he has “had stomach problems” and explains that he had a gallbladder and the situation “was a bit complicated”. The man also commented that he was in a lot of pain from the case.

In a note sent to TwitterThe Hospital das Clínicas regretted the death of the patient and reported that it “sympathizes with Paulo’s family and friends.”

The Hospital das Clínicas of the FMUSP reports with regret the death of patient Paulo Henrique Machado. Paulo contracted polio as a child and 51 years ago he was a resident of the Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology due to the consequences of the disease and the special care that his clinical condition inspired him. . Throughout this period, he had the humanized and specialized care of the Hospital professionals “.

Polio is a disease caused by poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3, which has no cure and is contagious. According to the Ministry of Health, most infected people have no symptoms, but that does not prevent other people from becoming infected. Serious manifestations of the disease still persist, as was the case with Paulo, which causes paralysis and can even lead to death.

Life not Hospital

Paulo had lived at the Hospital das Clínicas since he was one and a half years old. In an interview with Folha de S.Paulo in 2013, Paulo said that his mother died two days after he was born. Even as a baby, he had infantile paralysis that reached the respiratory system, forcing him to rely on the help of an artificial respiration device to live.

Even living in the hospital, Paulo studied, learned to read and write, finished high school, and took several computer and software courses, which he was completely passionate about. He even shared his routine on his YouTube channel and Facebook page.

It was this passion for technology, games and geek culture that prompted the patient to transform his experiences into a series of cartoons aimed at children. “The Adventures of Léca and her Friends” tells the story of seven children with physical disabilities and still reminds Paulo’s friends who did not resist the disease.

The plot’s tribute was also due to Léca, Eliana Zagui, Paulo’s bed neighbor and faithful companion of the patient during her years of hospitalization.

“I thought of an animation with the disabled. But he didn’t know if it would interest people. It was then, watching the animations with disabled characters made by a British studio that I like [Aardman Animations, especializado em animações stop-motion], who did the ‘Fuga das Galinhas’, which I thought was on the right track ”, said the patient at the time.

CCXP and her friends mourn the loss

CCXP (Comic Con Experience) mourned the death of Paulo, who, in his few exits from the hospital, attended the annual pop culture event to see up close the geek content he loved so much.

“The world lost a hero. Paulo Henrique Machado left us today, but his story will live in us forever. Because there is nothing more powerful than a good story and yours was incredible. Thank you for making us happy, inspiring us and sharing your passions with us, either in your videos or in the CCXP rooms. Go in peace, “wrote the official page of the event on Facebook.
