Specialist in “Caiman crocodilus yacare”, scientific name of the Pantanal caiman, the researcher Zilca Campos went to learn about the situation of the animals in the Nhecolândia region, in Mato Grosso do Sul. The video was released yesterday here in Campo Grande News, showing a sea of alligators competing for space in the water in the middle of a nearly dry landfill.

The scene was filmed by a Pantanal, impressed by an unprecedented situation even for him, used to living with the typical fauna of the region.

In the image, the animals hardly move, as a natural reflection to save energy. Around him, cattle groan. According to the narrator, it is from hunger.

Given the situation, Zilca stopped another ongoing alligator investigation to go and analyze the situation at the Palmeirinha farm.

The information obtained from the report is that he hopes to return today and present an assessment of what is happening. Zilca traveled from Embrapa’s base in the city of Nhumirim, closer to Nhecolândia.

The record was made 20 days after the last heavy rain recorded in Corumbá. In November it rained only 7.4 mm according to information from the meteorologist Natálio Abrahão.

According to him, since 1973 there has not been such a severe drought. This year, the Pantanal plain had fires that destroyed more than 4 million hectares.
