RIO – Brazil registered 32,262 new cases and 676 new deaths from coronavirus in the last 24 hours this Tuesday. So far, 5,909,002 cases and 166,743 lives lost have been confirmed since the start of the pandemic, according to the media consortium.

The initiative is made up of O GLOBO, Extra, G1, Folha de S.Paulo, UOL and O Estado de S. Paulo and collects information from the state health secretariats disseminated daily until 8 pm. The media initiative was created from inconsistencies in the data presented by the Ministry of Health.

The moving average of deaths, also verified by the bulletin, was 557. This is the highest mark in the last 35 days. This is a 45% growth compared to 15 days. The moving average of cases was 29,674, 71% more than two weeks ago.

The rise in the moving average may have been influenced by the stagnation in the disclosure of data by some states, especially in the number of deaths, which occurred between November 6 and 10.

The “7-day moving average” averages between the number of deaths for the day and the previous six. It is compared with an average of two weeks ago to indicate if there is an uptrend, stability or a downtrend. The calculation is a statistical resource to be able to see the trend of the data, drowning out the “noise” caused on weekends, when the notification of deaths is reduced due to the shortage of shift employees.

The Ministry of Health bulletin reported 216 new deaths caused by Covid-19 in the last 24 hours on Monday, for a total of 166,014 deaths. 13,371 new cases of coronavirus were reported, bringing the number of infected people to 5,876,464 in the country.

Seventeen states showed growth in the moving average of cases: Acre, Alagoas, Amapá, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraíba, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondônia, Santa Catarina, São Paulo. There was only one drop in Roraima.

In the moving average of deaths, there are 14 states that show growth: Amapá, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondônia, Roraima, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo and Tocantins. Only three fell: Amazonas, Ceará and Sergipe.

Increase in hospitalizations

The São Paulo government confirmed, on Monday, an 18% increase in hospitalizations for Covid-19 throughout the state, in public and private hospitals. Last week, a GLOBO report had already demonstrated the concern of the experts in relation to the jump in suspected cases of the disease and about a probable second wave in SP.

In the 46th epidemiological week (last week), 859 people were hospitalized. On day 47 (current week), the number of hospitalized patients statewide increased to 1,009. The increase in hospitalizations and the “blackout” of coronavirus data due to a failure in the Health Ministry system led the São Paulo government to postpone the reclassification of the state in the São Paulo Plan.

In October, 76% of the state left the yellow phase and went to the green phase, which allowed for more flexibility measures. On Monday, the government explained, the green phase could reach up to 90% of the state, but the decision is to postpone the evaluation until November 30.

Covid-19 contagion rate increases again in Brazil

The average transmission rate (Rt) of Covid-19 in Brazil was 1.1 last week, estimates Imperial College London in a survey published on Tuesday. According to figures from the British university, in reference to the interval ended last Monday, the Brazilian index grew 0.33 and returned to practically the same level as two weeks ago. The advance of the new coronavirus suggests that the country has once again come out of the deceleration trend of the pathogen.

The current Rt index, also called R0, indicates that every 100 infected people infect another 110. The contagion rate is one of the main references to monitor the epidemic evolution of Sars-CoV-2 in Brazil. When it is below one, the index indicates a stabilizing trend.

Brazilian researchers do not rule out a second wave. An eventual vaccination will take time to happen.

The American pharmaceutical company Moderna announced that its coronavirus vaccine is 94.5% effective. The information, positive news in the race for the immunizer against Covid-19, came after an initial analysis of the results of the study, which continues in Phase 3, the final one.

The researchers also reported that the results were better than “they dared to imagine,” but that the vaccine is unlikely to be available on a large scale until March.

Article:“This is the first sign that vaccines can really protect against disease,” says Natalia Pasternak.

Moderna is the second Western company to report preliminary data on a seemingly successful vaccine, offering hope for a pandemic that has infected more than 53 million people worldwide and killed more than 1.2 million. Pfizer, in collaboration with BioNTech, was the first to report last week that its vaccine was more than 90% effective.
