The race to create a vaccine against Covid-19 appears to be moving further and further. That’s because, according to a press release, the modern pharmaceutical company declared its vaccine 94.5% effective against the disease.

Despite the claim, the data have not yet been published or reviewed by other experts and are based on preliminary analyzes obtained in phase 3 of the studies. With this disclosure, the vaccine has a higher percentage than expected by industry experts.

“Aspiration, you would like to see 90%, but I didn’t expect this. I thought it would be good, but 94.5% is very impressive,” Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in an interview with New York Times.

The company revealed that, in an initial evaluation, 95 cases of Covid-19 infection were found two weeks after the application of the second dose of the immunizer – which had about 30 thousand volunteers.

Of the total positive cases, 90 were registered in the group that received the placebo and five among the people who were vaccinated with the compound. There are still 11 serious cases among the patients, but none of them received the immunizer: they were part of the control group.

Also, based on the results, there were no serious safety issues with the vaccine. However, the participants reported some side effects such as fatigue, headache, or pain at the injection site. Despite this, the symptoms quickly passed.

Immunizer characteristics.

Moderna’s vaccine was developed using gene-based technology. This type of immunizer is relatively simple to create, since researchers know the viral gene they are trying to fight; here, this was made possible by genetic sequencing of the virus at the beginning of the outbreak.

The company also used the statement to advertise certain storage information of its creation. The immunizer has been reported to last up to 30 days in a refrigerator between 2 ° C and 8 ° C. This should facilitate distribution and storage.

Now, Moderna’s plans include requesting authorization from the Food and Drug Administration for emergency vaccines and starting mass production of the immunizer. According to the pharmacist, the expectation that 20 million doses will be available by the end of 2020.
