RIO – Investigated for connection to the militia failed to be elected in Rio in 2020. Daniel Carvalho (PTC), son of a convicted militiaman, former councilor Luiz André Ferreira da Silva, received only 1,480 votes. Carminha Jerominho (PMB), daughter of Jerônimo Guimarães Filho, Jerominho, convicted of leading the largest militia in Rio, also did not get a seat on Rio’s City Council. He obtained just over 4,000 votes. This is the second time that Carminha, who is the subject of police investigations for her connection to the military, has not tried to return to office: in 2012, she ran and was unable to be elected either.
In 2008, Carminha managed to get elected despite being arrested after being accused of using the military to coerce voters in the West Zone. Jerominho’s daughter was inside the federal maximum security prison in Catanduvas, Paraná, when the results of the elections were known. A year after her arrest and being elected, the clan heir was charged with irregular fundraising, but returned to office in 2011 by decision of the Regional Electoral Court (TRE).

Last week, Carminha’s campaign was the target of a Federal Police operation that targeted campaign committees and companies linked to the practice of money laundering related to electoral crimes in the West Zone of Rio. PF agents carried out search and seizure warrants at the residences of Jerominho and his brother, José Guimarães Natalino, both released since last year, after spending more than ten years in jail.

During the investigations, atypical financial transactions of the order of R $ 1 million were identified in companies related to those investigated based on the analysis of the Financial Intelligence Reports (Rifs). According to the PF, these funds could possibly be used for election campaign expenses.

“Operation Sólon” also targeted the campaign of Jéssica Natalino, Natalino’s daughter and candidate for vice mayor on the Suêd Haidar (PMB) ballot, who also failed to be elected. The PF maintains that the investigated group has historical links with the militia in the Western Zone and the objective of recovering political power in the region through the candidacy of relatives.

After the operation, Carminha Jerominho told GLOBO that the PF’s actions repeated a pattern from previous elections, in which she and her family had already been targeted.
– This (the operation) is the product of complaints from political opponents. All choices are the same. In 2008, I was arrested. In 2012, they forged a place that was not my committee – declared the candidate, referring to a deposit of campaign materials where the PF found heavy weapons that year.
