A Brazilian team maintained 100% utilization in the South American Qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup. On Friday night, the Tite he won Venezuela 1-0 and reached nine points. In a weak game at Morumbi, Brazil suffered to pierce the opponent’s boom and scored in the second half with Roberto Firmino. The team plays again on Tuesday, against Uruguayin Montevideo.
Without its two main stars, Neymar and Philippe Coutinho, injured, the Brazilian team had many difficulties to create. It is true that Richarlison had his goal disallowed after six minutes of play, in a controversial move, in a marked impediment of Renan Lodi at the beginning of the play. But Tite’s team did little in the first leg.
Venezuela closed with a line of five defenders, another with four players and only Rondón ahead. Brazil adopted a similar scheme to the one they had shown in the Qualifiers debut, against Bolivia, when Lodi practically acted as a forward. And it was on the left that the team got their few good plays.
The disallowed goal came from a shot from Marquinhos to Lodi, who crossed. Fariñez crashed in the middle of the area and Richarlison scored. The play was reviewed by the referee on video and the offside was marked, but the image shown is not conclusive.
Even in the first half, Richarlison missed an incredible opportunity. In another Lodi center, Gabriel Jesús headed at the far post and Richarlison, without a goalkeeper and inside the small area, finished off.
Venezuela made it clear that they went to Morumbi to hold the tie and did not even try to attack. The only possibility for the team in the first half was a quick counterattack. Soteldo made his move that the Santos fan got used to seeing: he dribbled down the left and crossed, but Marquinhos cleared for a corner.
In the second half, Tite left the team more offensive by returning from halftime with Lucas Paquetá in place of Douglas Luiz. In addition, the coach changed the position of the attack, moving Richarlison to the right side and passing Gabriel Jesús to the role of center forward.
However, the changes had little effect early in the second half. Brazil continued with many difficulties to pierce the Venezuelan boom. When Tite called Everton Cebolinha and Pedro, Brazil opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Paquetá threw a beautiful ball to Everton Ribeiro, who crossed with the right. Lodi competed for the top, and the ball went to Firmino to complete for the back of the net.
The goal made Tite change his mind for a while, and Cebolinha and Pedro ended up putting the reserve vest back on. They entered ten minutes after the goal in the spot of Jesús and Richarlison. A standout from Flamengo, Pedro made his debut with the Brazilian team.
Even behind the scoreboard, Venezuela took little risk. Only in the additions he had the opportunity to take a free kick from Otero, from Corinthians. Brazil also kept struggling to pierce the opponent’s boom.
After scoring five goals in Bolivia and four in Peru, the Brazilian team did not repeat its good performance, but achieved a meager victory in Morumbi and leads the standings. Venezuela suffered its third defeat.
