Vice President Hamilton Mourão (PRTB) today attenuated the repercussion of yesterday’s statements by Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) on the relationship with the new president of the United States, Joe Biden. According to him, the Brazilian official used an “old aphorism” when speaking of the possibility of using “gunpowder” to protect the Amazon from an alleged foreign interest.
“He referred to an old aphorism that there, when diplomacy ends, it is with cannons. That’s what he means.”
Mourão also criticized what he called the “politicization” of the vaccines being tested in the scientific effort against the coronavirus pandemic. Various immunization possibilities are being developed in Brazil and abroad. One of them, CoronaVac, of Chinese origin and manufactured by the Butantan Institute in São Paulo, was suspended by Anvisa after the death of a volunteer.
However, so far, the death has no proven relationship to the ongoing investigation. Anvisa’s positioning came amidst a scene of political disputes between Bolsonaro and the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB). Following the agency’s decision, the president posted a message on Facebook in which he cites his enmity with the toucan and says he “won one more.”
“What you can’t do is politicize. Unfortunately, this issue is politicized. And the a side and the b side are. I think that is not good,” Mourão said.
Asked about the direction of the relationship between Brazil and the United States, the vice president declared that Bolsonaro’s position “does not cause anything.” “This is all rhetorical. You have to wait, from time to time.”
Bolsonaro has yet to send a public message to Biden to acknowledge his victory at the polls. In addition to his personal indisposition with the Democrat, Bolsonaro considers the result to be bad for Brazil, since the defeated candidate, current president and candidate for re-election, Donald Trump, was an ally for the first time.
