Vizcarra has held the position since 2018 and was dismissed five months before the general elections in the country.

The Peruvian Congress dismissed President Martín Vizcarra on Monday, in office since 2018.

The so-called “vacancy motion”, which determines the departure of the president, had 105 votes in favor, 19 against and 4 abstentions. According to the country’s Constitution, it took 87 votes out of a total of 130 for the motion to advance.

The legislator declared the president of “permanent moral incapacity”, whose impeachment was motivated by allegations of corruption during his tenure in the province of Moquegua between 2011 and 2014. Vizcarra’s departure occurs just five months before the country’s general elections .

The president of Parliament, Manuel Merino, is expected to assume the presidency.
