Santos drew with Red Bull Bragantino 1 to 1 tonight (8), at the Nabi Abi Chedid stadium, for the 20th round of the Brasileirão. Santos’ goal came in a strange play: Soteldo crossed, the ball hit Léo Ortiz’s hand inside the area and he died in the back of the goal. Ortiz himself drew at the last minute.
With the draw Santos reached 31 points and stayed close to the G-6. Red Bull Bragantino moved to 20 and is still close to the tournament’s relegation zone.
Santos returns to the field on Saturday (14), at 4:30 pm, to face Internacional, in Vila Belmiro, for the 21st day of the Brasileirão. Red Bull Bragantino will travel to Rio de Janeiro next Monday (16), at 8:00 p.m., to face Botafogo.
The best: Diego Pituca
In his 41st game as a starter in 2020, the only one that started all of Santos’ games in the year, Pituca fulfilled his role of scoring and connecting the defense with the midfield. It was from the middle up front that Peixe went crazy and failed to create plays. Shirt 21 launched Soteldo into the goal.
Worst: Jean Mota
The midfielder was once again chosen to arm the team, but played a game well below. He missed many passes and throws, giving possession of the ball rather than continuing plays as required by the setup function. He went out to rest.
Game timeline
After a very low first half, Santos opened the scoring at 18 minutes into the second stage. Soteldo took off down the left and crossed to the center of the area, but the ball hit Léo Ortiz’s hand, fooled goalkeeper Cleiton and died in the back of the net. There were doubts about whether the referee would give the penalty or the goal, but Rodrigo Guarizo validated the goal and gave it, at first, to the Venezuelan.
In the last minute, Red Bull Bragantino took a corner kick and Léo Ortiz, who had scored the ‘own goal’, won with a header and tied the game.
Santos’ performance: one of the worst games of the year
El Pez was unsuccessful in anything he tried in the first stage. With Arthur Gomes in Marinho’s place, assistant Cuquinha spent the first time yelling at young forward and midfielder Jean Mota. The two left in the second stage and Peixe improved, but continued with little creativity in the lead. Santos’ goal was the work of chance.
The Red Bull Bragantino game: pressure and bad luck
The interior played a better game than the rival, but failed to convert the superiority into goals. He hit the post twice, watched João Paulo work on other plays, and then forward Hurtado lost an incredible goal. In an unfortunate move, a Soteldo center hit Léo Ortiz’s hand and entered the goal. In the last minute, Léo Ortiz won a header and tied.
