After the “blended” ceremony for the arrival of Luiz Fux to the presidency of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), the Court prepared for this Thursday afternoon a “strictly virtual” inauguration of the new minister Kassio Marques. The September event resulted in several authorities being positively diagnosed for covid-19, including Fux himself.

President Jair Bolsonaro, however, must personally attend the ceremony. Marques is the prime minister designated by him for the Supreme. Of the ministers, at least five also confirmed that they will attend the plenary session to honor the inauguration of their colleague. Besides Fux, Gilmar Mendes, Luís Roberto Barroso, Edson Fachin and Alexandre de Moraes also attended. The ceremony is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

Other authorities, such as the Attorney General, Augusto Aras, expressed interest in physically attending the plenary session, as well as the presidents of the Chamber, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), and the Senate (DEM-AP).

In possession of Fux, family and friends took seats in the plenary audience. There was also a fraternization in the office of the new president. Now, the adviser to the presidency of the Court says that the ceremony must be quick and that “no one”, apart from the authorities, will have access to the plenary session.

Marques’ nomination stunned the political and legal world. Until Bolsonaro’s announcement, the name of the judge of the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF-1) was not among the bets for the position.

On behalf of the lawyer, who made a career as a lawyer in Piauí, he was supported by ministers, such as Gilmar and Dias Toffoli, and by parliamentarians from the so-called “Centrão”, but he disliked the supporters of the ideological wing of the government.

On Saturday by the Senate on October 21, Marques found a slightly hostile environment and the House approved his name by 57 votes to 10.

Marques will replace Minister Celso de Mello, who retired on October 13, after 31 years on the Supreme Court. He will inherit the collection of demands from the former dean. The investigation that investigates whether Bolsonaro tried to unduly interfere with the autonomy of the Federal Police (PF), however, was redistributed, so as not to remain in the hands of the new minister. Investigations are now being carried out by Moraes.
