A two-headed horned shark was found by fishermen on the border between Itanhaém and Peruíbe, off the coast of São Paulo. According to Brazilian scientists, the animal also has two hearts and two independent spinal columns, in addition to other double internal organs. The information is from G1.
According to the professor and biologist Edris Queiroz, this is “the first case in the world, recorded and documented in the literature, of a Siamese twin-horned shark found in the wild.” He and researcher Luana Felix, from the Institute of Marine Biology and the Environment (Ibimm) conducted a study on the found animal.
“After analyzing the external and internal anatomy of the shark, the best definition for the case is that they would be Siamese twins. It is a very rare event, we must have between 10 cases in the world. The problem is that they die quickly, shortly after birth. They become easy prey and end up being prey, ”Edris explained to G1.
In addition to the Ibimm team, professors Alberto Amorim and Eduardo Malavasi, from the Santos Fisheries Institute, also participated in the study.
