Palmeiras will give their new coach, Abel Ferreira, carte blanche to work within the base department of the club. The main reason the technician was hired was to integrate professionals and amateurs and Ferreira asked for freedom to change, for example, the working methods if necessary.
This does not mean that there will be name changes that address the base, not at least at the beginning – Abel Ferreira’s contract is until the end of 2022, with automatic renewal until 2023 if there is consensus. It was agreed between the club and the coach that Wesley Carvalho, the praised U-20 coach, will be Ferreira’s support in this beginning of interaction between the Academies.
Ferreira, 41, arrived in Brazil with two assistants, both specialized in working with grassroots teams and, in Europe, with Bs teams, which are normally used for revelations to gain experience in professional tournaments: Carlos Martinho, 36, and Vítor Castanheira. 43
It was decided that one of the two in that first moment will spend a good part of the time observing the base project, in the CT category in Guarulhos. The reports will go to the hands of Ferreira, who will dedicate his time in those first weeks to meet the professional team and impose his style of play for the remainder of the season, which will only end in February 2021.
“We know the greatness of the club, the goals of the club, the players it has at the Academy. It was one of the reasons that led Palmeiras to hire me: the commitment to young people. Abel Ferreira when he left Portugal for Brazil this Sunday (1).
As UOL Esporte shows, Palmeiras in 2020 reached a record in the use of players from the lower categories. Adding the number of games played by the athletes trained at the base and making their debut this season, Palmeiras reached the best mark of the century.
The list with names like Patrick de Paula, Gabriel Menino, Wesley, Gabriel Silva, Danilo and Renan, as well as Alan (on loan to Guarani) and Angulo (on loan to Cruzeiro and then Botafogo), adds 104 games played in 2020, one more than what was recorded in 2010. Gabriel Veron, for example, does not count because he debuted in 2019.
The Portuguese coach accepted last week the offer of the Alviverde club, which will pay around R $ 4 million to PAOK to release him from his contract, the salary will be around R $ 800 thousand per month.
