After two games without a win, Coritiba ended Brasileirão’s first matchday with a victory over Atlético-GO in Couto Pereira. In a match valid for matchday 19 of the championship, Coxa won 1-0 and is momentarily leaving the relegation zone.
The only goal of the match was scored by Matheus Galdezani and left with just seven minutes left, in Coritiba’s first submission in the match. The midfielder also had a ball off the post in the final stretch of the first half.
With the result, Coxa rose to 19 points and reached 16th place. However, the team can still be overtaken by Red Bull Bragantino and Vasco, if the teams win their respective matches. Atlético-GO finished the first round with 22 points and currently occupies 12th place.
On Tuesday (3), Atlético-GO will be in Porto Alegre, where they will try to reverse Internacional’s advantage in the second leg of the Copa do Brasil round of 16. The following Sunday, Coritiba will also face Inter, this time for Brasileirão.
Ricardo Oliveira: he continues to help a lot
The 40-year-old veteran Ricardo Oliveira can no longer play at the same level as before, but he showed that he can still be very important to Coxa. What is lacking, for example, in speed, is still very good in technique. Matheus Galdezani’s goal came from his game. In the second half, he even threw a free kick that resulted in Neilton’s goal disallowed.
Éder: bad
The situation was no worse for Éder because the goal born from the foul he committed on Ricardo Oliveira was annulled. However, the defender received the third yellow card and will miss Coritiba in the match against Corinthians in the next round.
Substitutes duel
Both Coritiba and Atlético-GO went up to the Couto Pereira field without the first coaches. In the case of Coxa, Rodrigo Santana has already been hired, but who commanded the team was the assistant Pachequinho. Dragão is with Eduardo Souza as interim coach and has not yet defined who the new coach will be. Counting the Copa do Brasil match, this was Atlético-GO’s fourth consecutive non-winning match.
Coritiba plays less, but is more efficient
Coritiba opened the scoring in Couto Pereira with just seven minutes of play, in their first attack attempt. Matheus Galdezani received the pass from Giovanni Augusto and kicked from the edge of the area to the back of the net.
After that, Coritiba went to have another opportunity in the first half only in … minutes, when Galdezani risked from outside the area and hit the crossbar.
During all that time, Atlético-GO had a wide dominance of the game. He failed to reach the goal as effectively as the home team, despite forcing Wilson to make a good save on Matheus Vargas’ header.
Coritiba even expanded, but it wasn’t worth it
After the break, the game became scarcer and scoring opportunities became increasingly rare. Shortly before being substituted, Ricardo Oliveira had an opportunity in the free kick, which deflected in the barrier and left Neilton to finish off the nets. However, the referee observed a touch from the attacker’s hand and canceled the play.
Atlético-GO have two other good chances to tie, both with Wellington Rato. In the first, Wilson made a good save again and blocked the goal. The second was already at the end of the additions, but the ball exploded on the crossbar.
