Those who passed by Burger King (BK) on ACM Avenue, in Salvador, between dawn and Saturday afternoon (31), faced a very unusual scene: instead of cars, customers, mostly young people, were with brooms in the drive-thru line. What was supposed to be a marketing action in celebration of Halloween ended up generating an agglomeration of people and huge queues, contrary to the recommendations to combat the coronavirus. This happened not only in Salvador, but also in various franchise units across the country and of course became a topic on social media (see videos below).
In the capital of Bahia, employees reported that customers waited around 1 hour in line to guarantee the gift. However, around 3:30 pm, the Av. ACM unit was vetoed by agents of the Municipal Development and Urban Planning Department (Sedur) and military police for doing irregular promotion and generating lines in the external area.
According to municipal decree 32,656 / 2020, it is forbidden to carry out events or promotions that can generate crowds of people. “During the inspection, the agents of the task force also identified that the temperature was not being checked at the entrance of the establishment,” Sedur reported in a note.
Sedur’s secretary, Sérgio Guanabara, describes the action as irresponsible. “Promoting agglomeration in the middle of a pandemic is unacceptable. This hurts the decree and shows the lack of commitment to the population. Our inspectors are on the streets to prevent this from happening and ensure everyone’s safety, ”he said.

Burger King announced on social media that some units in Brazil would give a free Whopper sandwich to customers who sweep the broom at the drive-thru from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. To participate in the promotion, according to the chain of restaurants specializing in fast food, the customer had to ride a broom, wear a protective mask and present identification with a photo and CPF.
For MAIL, Burger King said that “employees were instructed to reinforce the need for social distance and the use of a mask, in order to maintain the safety of all consumers present.” However, due to an orientation from the responsible bodies, the action was closed to guarantee the welfare of all. Burger King respects and understands the position of the entity and, therefore, promptly accepted the established decision. The company reinforces, however, that it strictly follows all the health, hygiene and safety protocols recommended by the World Health Organization ”, says the note.
