Palmeiras announced on Friday (30) the hiring of coach Abel Ferreira for the vacancy of Vanderlei Luxembourg, fired two weeks ago. The 41-year-old Portuguese commanded PAOK for the last time on Thursday (29), in a match valid for the Europa League, and said goodbye to the Greek club.
The new commander of the São Paulo team signed a contractual contract until the end of 2022. With him come the assistants Carlos Martinho and Vitor Castanheira, the performance analyst Tiago Costa and the head of physical preparation João Martins.
To get the professional out of Europe, in addition to reaching an agreement with him, the board of directors needed to negotiate with PAOK. The coach’s contract with the team was scheduled to end in 2022, with a termination fine of 2.5 million euros (R $ 16.8 million).
The associations did not disclose the amount agreed for the release, but it is much less than the total fine. After the negotiation, Palmeiras awaits the arrival of its new commander next week, to start the commitment signed at the end of 2022.
The result ends a search that has always focused on foreign names. The club had advanced deals with Spaniard Miguel Ángel Ramírez, but warned that he would only leave Independiente del Valle de Ecuador at the end of the Copa Libertadores campaign.
As they were not willing to wait, the leaders of the São Paulo team began to study other possibilities, such as the Argentine Gabriel Heinze and Ariel Holan and the Spaniard Quique Setién. In the end, they were satisfied with the bet on Ferreira.
The expectation of the top hats is that the Portuguese will be able to implant in Brazil an aggressive football, of imposition on the rivals. In firing Luxembourg, President Maurício Galiotte said he was looking for “a concept”, pointing to the offensive DNA of the Alviverde club.
Right back for Portuguese teams in a relatively low-key career as a player, Abel Ferreira began working as a coach at the Sporting base. Then, he won a shot at Braga’s main team and built a good campaign in the 2017/18 Portuguese Championship.
That season, he earned 75 points, a team record, and ranked fourth, behind the greats Porto, Benfica and Sporting. There were 74 goals in 34 games, in addition to the revelation of forward Francisco Trincão, now in Barcelona and in the Portuguese team.
The desire to climb young was one of the reasons that caught the attention of Palmeiras, which has several boys on its team. The idea is that the commander helps in the development of athletes such as Gabriel Menino, Patrick de Paula, Wesley and Gabriel Veron, in addition to promoting other boys.
A disciple of Jesualdo Ferreira, the Portuguese who led Santos this year, Abel arrived at PAOK at the beginning of the 2019/20 season and led the team to the Greek runner-up. More recently, he drew attention by eliminating Benfica, owned by Jorge Jesús, in the preliminary phase of the current edition of the Champions League.
However, PAOK failed to advance to the group stage and had to settle for the Europa League. After drawing 1-1 with the Cypriot Omonia, he went 0-0 with Granada of Spain in which he was the coach’s farewell.
He said goodbye with a total of 31 wins in 57 games. In Braga, there were 63 victories in 103 matches. In Palmeiras, in addition to good numbers, Ferreira will be charged for good football, something the team could not produce for much of the year.
