Brazil today surpassed the mark of 5.5 million cases of covid-19. With 23,126 positive tests registered in the last 24 hours, the country reached 5,519,528 confirmed diagnoses of the disease since the start of the pandemic. The information is from the media consortium of which the Twitter It is part of.

The moving average of deaths from the disease has shown stability for five days. There were 529 deaths in the last 24 hours. In an average of seven days, the country had 433 deaths (-12%). In total, the number of deaths since the start of the pandemic is 159,562.

Health data

According to information released today by the Ministry of Health, in the last 24 hours there were 22,282 new positive tests for the disease, which brings the number of infected to 5,516,658 since the start of the pandemic.

From yesterday to today, there were 508 deaths caused by covid-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 159,477 across the country.

Also according to the federal government, 4,966,264 people recovered from the disease and another 390,917 are being followed.

10 states in decline; 5 on the rise

Ten Brazilian states and the Federal District showed a drop in the variation of the moving average of deaths from covid-19, while five were discharged.

Acre (40%), Amapá (17%), Ceará (34%), Espírito Santo (17%) and Santa Catarina (36%) were the states that showed the highest levels. Amapá, however, has a low number of deaths, between 0 and 2 in the last week. The slight increase in these numbers already puts the state on the rise. The same is true in Acre.

In fact, the other states have shown an upward variation compared to the 14-day average.

Among the regions, none increased. The center-west (-20%) and the northeast (-19%) decreased. The others remained stable: North (-4%), Southeast (-10%) and South (-4%).

See the oscillation in the states:

  • Acceleration: AC, AP, CE, ES and SC;
  • Stability: AM, BA, GO, MA, PA, PE, PI, RJ, RO, RS, and SE;
  • Remains: AL, DF, MG, MS, MT, PB, PR, RN, RR, SP and TO.

To measure the situation of deaths from covid-19, experts indicate using the moving average of deaths, which calculates the average of records observed in the last seven days. The operation is the most suitable to observe the trend of the statistics, since it balances the abrupt variations of the numbers throughout the week.

The media consortium adopted this period to verify fluctuations in the moving average. We can speak of a drop in figures when the drop is greater than 15% if it is verified in the last 14 days, in this case, the period of the last two weeks. If the numbers rise more than 15%, the epidemic accelerates. Intermediate values indicate stability.

Vehicles gather for information

In response to the decision of the government of Jair Bolsonaro to restrict access to data on the covid-19 pandemic, media Twitter, El Estado de S. Paulo, Folha de S.Paulo, O Globo, G1 and Extra formed a consortium to work collaboratively to seek the necessary information directly from the state health departments of the 27 units of the Federation.

The federal government, through the Ministry of Health, should be the natural source of these figures, but the attitudes of the authorities and the president himself during the pandemic cast doubt on the availability of the data and its veracity.
