A strong earthquake shook the Aegean on Friday (30) and was felt in Turkey and Greece.

Agencies monitoring earthquakes recorded different numbers. The Turkish agency says it was a 6.6 magnitude earthquake. The US service says it was higher, at 7.0.

The worst affected city was Izmir, on the Turkish coast. People ran into the streets after the earthquake. The Turkish television network TRT Haber showed a collapsing building in the central region.

According to data from the Turkish agency, the epicenter took place about 17 kilometers off the coast of Turkey, at a depth of 16 kilometers.

Americans have different information: the depth was 10 kilometers and the epicenter was 33.5 kilometers from the coast.

In Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, the earthquake was felt, but there are no reports of significant damage.

Authorities asked the 45,000 residents of the Greek island of Samos to stay home.

On social media, the profiles have posted videos from Izmir that seem to indicate that the buildings have collapsed – there is a cloud of debris in some parts of the city.
