On October 29, 2019, the South Central Coast of Santa Catarina registered the occurrence of a tsunami wave. The confirmation of the phenomenon was released by the Agricultural Research and Rural Extension Company of Santa Catarina (Epagri) on Thursday 29, a year after the phenomenon.

According to the publication, the wave was recorded by the Epagri tide stations. Initially in Balneário Rincão, passing through Imbituba, Florianópolis and dissipating near Balneário Camboriú at approximately 2:30 pm.

The characterization of the phenomenon is described in the document Atmospheric Induced Large Amplitude Sea Level Oscillations on October 29, 2019 in Santa Catarina, Brazil. This one, published this week by the prestigious magazine Natural Hazards, publisher Springer.

The work was launched by Rogério Candella, a researcher for the Brazilian Navy in Rio de Janeiro. He contacted Epagri and suggested a detailed study of the phenomenon.

Meteotsunami

The phenomenon was a meteorological tsunami, that is, a meteotsunami. According to Epagri, the network of meteorological radars, meteorological stations and tide gauges that are part of the coastal monitoring system of the region, were fundamental for the characterization and confirmation of the event.

In the case of Santa Catarina, the generation of the tsunami was due to the alignment of a rapid change in atmospheric pressure with the waves of the sea that reached the shallower coastal waters.

“The Epagri tide gauge that operates in the port of Imbituba was essential for the detection of the meteotsunami, since it operates in conditions similar to the IOC’s worldwide network for the prevention and detection of tsunamis, registering sea level every 60 seconds. After the change in sea level in the other tide gauges, it was concluded that this meteotsunami was characterized by two main waves, which at their maximum reached 75 and 118 cm, and that traveled the coast from south to north of the state at a speed of 1, 4 km / min “, explains the publication.

Registration of the phenomenon

On October 29, 2019, a flash flood “washed away” boats and cars. This brought losses to fishermen and residents of the coast.

According to Epagri, this is not the first time that the waves have caused damage on the coast of Santa Catarina. But the speed and force of the event caught the attention of oceanography experts across the country.
