Palmeiras scores 3 goals in 30 minutes and beats Bragantino away from home

Palmeiras beat Red Bull Bragantino 3-1 today (29) in the first leg of the knockout stages of the Brazilian Cup, and took a good step in the tie. With a strong start at the Nabi Abi Chedid Stadium, Verdão scored three goals in the first 30 minutes, with Raphael Veiga, Wesley and Luiz Adriano. Jan Hurtado took the second half.

After the result away from home, Palmeiras may lose on goal difference next week (day 5), at Allianz Parque; away goal is not a tiebreaker. Therefore, if Bragantino wins by two goals in the second leg, regardless of the score, the decision of the match will be on penalties.

Until the teams meet, Verdão is expected to confirm his new coach. Portuguese Abel Ferreira, from PAOK (GRE), has made progress in the negotiations to assume the vacant post since the resignation of Vanderlei Luxembourg, just over two weeks ago.

BEST: Wesley keeps unbalancing

Wesley’s stage is great, and the striker finished again as one of Palmeiras’ highlights. He led the team with the dribble and started the first goal. Open to the left, the 47 jersey has been an important piece in interim Andrey Lopes’ team. In addition, he has been improving when deciding plays and scored again today.

THE WORST: Braga’s sides suffer

Aderlan and Edimar are going to have nightmares with the Palmeiras forwards. They were very exposed and saw the opponent lie down and roll in counterattacks across the field.

FELIPE MELO BACK TO HALF

The main change in Verdão was Felipe Melo’s return to midfield, sending Patrick de Paula back to the bench. Defense since the beginning of 2020, the captain alviverde gave a beautiful assist to Wesley’s goal, but ended up yellowing in the second half due to a foul on Claudinho in the half moon.

Maurício Barbieri’s team had a disastrous performance at home. Even with more than 60% possession of the ball for much of the time, he created very little danger, and every time he was countered it was difficult. Well blocked by Palmeiras, the Bragança Paulista team improved in the second half and managed to discount. The score could have been a lot worse.

YIELD OF PALM TREES

Besides being well positioned defensively, Palmeiras was overwhelming stealing the ball and speeding up plays. Wesley and Ron at the sides, and Zé Rafael assisting in the transition played important roles in building the result. Andrey Lopes’ strategy was very well executed in the first half. After the break, however, Verdão ended up backtracking too far and missed an opportunity to improve the place.

GAME CHRONOLOGY

Palmeiras quickly secured the victory in the clash for the Copa do Brasil, since in the first half hour they had 3-0 in their favor. Raphael Veiga, at four minutes, concluded the play of Zé Rafael to open the scoring, Wesley expanded after the launch of Felipe Melo at 17, and Luiz Adriano took advantage of the surplus inside the area, at 27, in an overwhelming start of Verdão.

Red Bull Bragantino came back from the break trying to bother to mitigate the loss, but had a hard time breaking Alviverde’s good block – the Palmeiras players proved to be quite connected and fighting a lot the whole time. However, after Mauricio Barbieri’s exchanges, the home team pushed harder and Jan Hurtado managed to score with a strong shot, at 37 in the final stage.
