A meteor was seen on Monday night (26) in several cities in Bahia. Residents reported seeing a strong flash in cities, especially in the Baixo Sul region. According to a bulletin from the Bramon Observatory, it is a bright meteor, which was recorded on camera in two cities: Ipirá and Itaberaba.

Nícolas Oliveira, a doctoral student at the National Observatory, says that to prove that it was a fireball it would be necessary to find a meteorite, but that it is likely a meteor that exploded in the air, which would explain the noises that are heard. “Everything indicates that it was actually the meteor due to the dynamics of the movement itself, and this space rock exploded due to gases in the atmosphere. It probably exploded in the air, which is what causes the crash,” he says. “The basic difference is that the meteor explodes in the air and the fragments of this explosion that reach the ground are meteorites,” he continues. “Depending on the speed of the explosion and the shock wave, it can cause an earthquake. It is something that comes at a very high speed that can make neighboring regions feel some tremor, ”he explains.

A neighbor of Ituberá said that he saw the light around 9:45 p.m. “At home, everything was shaking. First, a very large fireball in the sky, after a few seconds, everything was shaking. Then there was a flash, which looked like a day. It was a huge fireball, very fast. It seemed a Hiroshima bomb, only three times bigger. I’m scared to this day, “says administrative assistant Juárez Souza Soares, 46. “The shaking was very fast,” he adds. “The staff said that the fireball fell into the sea, on the beach of Pratigi. If it had landed, there would have been a fire,” he believes.

Another person from the city used social media to describe the scene. “An unidentified object has just fallen in Ituberá. The sky turned all blue and after a ball of fire, a very loud explosion followed that shook many houses. Scared city! “, Wrote.

In Amargosa, I report that there was a loud outbreak. “The walls and floor of the house shook after hearing a loud crash, like thunder, but fast,” wrote one resident. Another described the phenomenon as “a super fast blue and yellow ‘explosion’. Even Salvador had a record of who said he saw it.” Has anyone from Salvador now seen a fireball falling from the sky? I see, what a strange thing, I never saw anything like it, “reported a netizen.

From Maraú, resident Natan also told his story. “We were on the balcony of the house, at the top, and there was a 7, 8 second flash in the sky, which I, at 33, never saw in my life,” he says. Then an explosion, like a storm that lasted 10 seconds, without stopping, accompanied by a crash ”. For him, the experience was incredible, but it also scared him: “I had to take my blood pressure medication to avoid having a heart attack.”

There were reports of those who still saw the light in Ubaíra, Elísio Medrado, Wenceslau Guimarães and São Miguel das Matas, among others. From the analysis of the videos, Bramon concluded that the fireball had a predominantly east-west trajectory, appearing at 9:29 pm about 5 km above Taperoá, continuing up to about 10 km above Burietá. The trajectory is still considered preliminary.
