China is promoting city-wide coronavirus testing due to a regional outbreak in Xinjiang province.

Approximately 4.7 million people in Kashgar are being tested, with 138 asymptomatic cases found so far.

China has been very successful in reducing infection rates, but small outbreaks continue to occur.

Xinjiang Province in western China is home to the Uighur Muslim ethnic minority, which according to human rights groups is being persecuted by the Beijing government.

Schools in Kashgar have been closed and residents cannot leave the city unless they have tested negative.

The first case of the Kashgar outbreak was that of an asymptomatic woman working in a garment factory in Shufu County, on the outskirts of the city.

The woman, who discovered she was infected after what Chinese state media described as a “routine test,” was the first local case detected in mainland China in 10 days.

The massive tests, which began on Saturday, identified another 137 asymptomatic cases.

Asymptomatic cases are not counted in China’s official count of 85,810 confirmed infections. The death toll in the country is 4,634.

More than 2.8 million tests were administered in Kashgar on Sunday afternoon (25) and the rest will be completed in two days, according to city officials.

In addition to the Uyghurs, Xinjiang province is also home to other Turkmen Muslims.

Xinjiang province has a network of detention camps that China says are “re-education” centers needed to combat extremism. However, human rights groups see them as part of a campaign to suppress the culture, language and identity of the Muslim minority.

The United States recently blocked some exports from Xinjiang due to alleged human rights abuses and forced labor.

Although normal life has resumed in much of China, small coronavirus outbreaks continue to occur that authorities have decided to deal with with immediate mass testing.

In early October, for example, Qingdao City tested its entire population, nine million people.

The massive test came after the discovery of a dozen cases linked to a hospital treating coronavirus patients from abroad.

But the measure was no longer new. In May, China had analyzed the population of 11 million people in Wuhan, the city where the new coronavirus was first identified.

The country has managed to control the virus, unlike other parts of the world, where there are still a large number of cases and movement restrictions of varying degrees.
