Grêmio repeated the strategy of playing with a subsidiary and triumphed for the first time at Brasileirão. Even without shining, he did enough to beat Athletico-PR 2-1 this Sunday, at Arena da Baixada, for the 18th round. But he opened the lack of ambition in the championship and did not escape criticism from the fans.
The unionists’ demonstrations on social media began as soon as the line-up was announced – and without players on the field. THE #ForaRenato It was already one of the most talked about topics on Twitter even before the game started. The tone of discontent grew at the end of the first half, with a partial victory for Huracán.
The second half arrived and Renato decided to send Pepê to the field, instead of Everton. The only headline related to the trip to Curitiba, gave the team a new life and was instrumental in the change. The tie came with a goal against, from Thiago Heleno. And the winning goal almost ended with the young Ferreira, another who came off the bench.
Three points on the scoreboard, approved strategy and end of criticism, right? Not so much. At the post-match press conference, Renato was asked again about the excess of preservations in the national championship. He repeated a speech already delivered on other occasions, that Grêmio does not leave the Brasileirão. But that seems to no longer convince the fan.
– You may think that Renato is putting himself in a different team because he has the Copa do Brasil. Nothing to see. People have to understand that the same team cannot be put on every three days – justified the coach.
– Sometimes, I change a lot in the Brazilian just because the Brazilian has 38 rounds. In crowns, it’s a knockout. If I praise the guys and the group so much, why not put it on the line? The biggest test was today, a very difficult match. We left behind, we had the courage to react. We had a great victory away from home – added Renato.

In his interview, soccer vice president Paulo Luz was also asked about the issue. Especially on a statement by Vice President Cláudio Oderich before the game, in which he said that the club’s priority was the cups, Libertadores and Copa do Brasil.
– Oderich is vice president of Grêmio, he is my friend, we have a high relationship, he has the right to speak. But I say that we have a focus which is to compete in all three competitions and try to win as much as possible. Grêmio in every dispute behaves to win, if we are to win, it is the game, it is the routine of football – declared the leader.
For the Brazilian Championship, Renato made the same choice to save the champions in the tie with Ceará 1 to 1, at Arena Castelão, and in the loss to Atlético-MG 3 to 1, in Mineirão. Sunday’s 2-1 score was a first for Tricolor with reserves on the field.
With the victory, Grêmio reached 24 points and climbed to ninth place in the table, with one game less. The distance to the G-6 is three points and the G-4, five. The next opponent in the Brasileirão will be Bragantino, on Monday 2.
But now the focus is once and for all on the Copa do Brasil. Tricolor debuts in the round of 16 against Juventude on Thursday, at 9:30 p.m., in the Arena. With the headlines rested and, in a way, pressured to achieve a good result.
