Venezuelan opposition politician Leopoldo López arrived in Madrid on Sunday (25), the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

He fled on Saturday (24), after spending a year and a half in refuge at the residence of the Spanish ambassador in Venezuela.

“Leopoldo López arrived in Madrid today, being able to reunite with his family,” said the statement from the Spanish government.

A López’s decision to leave the Spanish embassy in Venezuela was “personal and voluntary”, said the folder.

He left Venezuela by a clandestine route on the border with Colombia. López is with his parents, who live in the Spanish capital, along with his wife and daughter. (see more in the video above)

“Venezuelans, this decision was not easy, but rest assured that you can count on this server to fight anywhere,” Lopez tweeted Sunday morning, Reuters reported.

“We are not going to rest and we will continue working day and night to achieve the freedom that all Venezuelans deserve.”

Leopoldo López was arrested in 2014 after leading protests against President Nicolás Maduro. He was paroled in 2017.

During his house arrest, López became a mentor to opposition leader Juan Guaidó, who earlier last year invoked the Constitution to assume an interim presidency and launched a campaign to overthrow Nicolás Maduro.

After the failure of the military uprising in April 2019, Leopoldo López took refuge first in the Chilean diplomatic residence, and then in the Embassy of Spain, after the failure of the military rebellion of April 30 against Nicolás Maduro, according to the RFI.
