Afghanistan said on Sunday (25) that it killed, during an operation in the east of the country, a top al-Qaeda chief. He was on a list of the most wanted by the FBI, which is the federal agency of the United States.
The news of the death of Husam Abd al-Rauf, known by the nom de guerre Abu Muhsin al-Masri, comes after weeks of violence, including an Islamic State suicide attack on an educational center near Kabul, killing 24.
The Afghan government says it continues to fight Taliban militants, including with the peace talks in Qatar between the two sides, which are taking place for the first time.
The violence and reported murder of al-Rauf threatens peace negotiations and risks plunging the country, ravaged by decades of war, into further instability.
Details of the operation that led to al-Rauf’s alleged death were not released, even hours after the intelligence service of the Afghan National Security Directorate posted on Twitter that he killed him in Ghazni province. Al-Qaeda did not immediately acknowledge the terrorist’s death.
The FBI, the US military and NATO did not comment on the matter until the latest update of this report.
