BRASÍLIA – President Jair Bolsonaro participated this Friday in a ceremony in which the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) presented the F-39E Gripen aircraft, at the Brasilia Air Base. This is the first of 36 aircraft under the contract signed in 2014 with the Swedish manufacturer Saab for the renewal of the Brazilian fleet.

Currently, Brazil has mainly American F-5 fighters, manufactured in the 1970s and operated in five squadrons, distributed in the North, South, Southeast and Midwest regions.
The new combatants are expected to become operational at the end of 2021. The FAB investment is R $ 24 billion, in updated amounts, with financing for 25 years. If the payment and production schedule is met, in 2026 all units will be at the Anápolis Air Base (GO).

This Friday’s event is in honor of Aviator’s Day and the Brazilian Air Force. The chosen date marks the 114th anniversary of the first flight of the 14-Bis, which took place in 1906, in Paris, commanded by Alberto Santos-Dumont. At the ceremony, Bolsonaro popped champagne on top of the game, as part of his baptism. He also got on the plane.
The Environment Ministers, Ricardo Salles, and the Secretary of the Government, Luiz Eduardo Ramos, were present at the event, who yesterday staged a public disagreement on the social network. At one point in the ceremony, the two had a brief moment of interaction: Bolsonaro hugged Salles while Ramos was by his side.
