President Jair Bolsonaro addressed the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, on Thursday (22) and affirmed that Brazil did not increase taxes during the new coronavirus pandemic nor will it increase when the pandemic ends.
Bolsonaro and Guedes participated in the graduation ceremony for new diplomats this Thursday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Last month, the Minister of Economy said that the country has to relieve the payroll of companies and, for that, it needs to look for “alternative taxes.”
“We are simplifying taxes. Our country, Paulo Guedes, the federal government did not increase taxes during the pandemic and it will not increase them when it also leaves us,” Bolsonaro said Thursday.
On August 2, Bolsonaro said in an interview that there will only be a new tax if there is no increase in the tax burden. Three days later, on August 5, Guedes affirmed that the Brazilian tax system is a “madhouse” and that it will not increase the tax burden.
Paulo Guedes has previously defended the creation of a tax on digital transactions, which has been called the “new CPMF”, in reference to the defunct Provisional Contribution to Financial Transactions.
The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), however, has already said that he believes that the proposal, if sent to Congress, will not be approved.
