The President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, said on Thursday (22) that he will invite foreign diplomats to visit the Amazon rainforest and that they will not see “anything burning, not even one hectare of devastated jungle.”

“We are finishing a trip to Manaus-Boa Vista, where we will invite diplomats from other countries to demonstrate in this short trip of an hour and a half, that they will not see anything in our Amazon rainforest burning not even one hectare of devastated rainforest,” he said.

Bolsonaro gave the statement at the graduation ceremony of the Rio Branco Institute, at the Itamaraty Palace.

This Thursday (22), Ibama’s decision began to be enforced by determining the interruption, throughout the country, of the forest fire brigades. According to the agency, the measure was motivated by “financial unavailability.”

Data from the Inpe (National Institute for Space Research) show that the number of fire outbreaks registered in the Amazon from January to September of this year was the highest since 2010. That year, there were 102,409 fire points in the forest of 1 from January to January 30 September; in 2020, in the same period, they were 76,030.

Also according to Inpe, the Legal Amazon had an area of 964 km² under deforestation alert in September, the second largest in five years, according to data updated in early October.

The Legal Amazon corresponds to 59% of the Brazilian territory, and includes the area of 8 states (Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins) and part of Maranhão.

The intention to take diplomats on a trip to the Amazon was announced in September by Vice President Hamilton Mourão, who heads the National Council for Legal Amazon.

Mourão decided to organize the trip after receiving a letter signed by eight European countries saying that increased deforestation makes it difficult to buy Brazilian products.

The idea was to make the trip in October. However, the government has not yet confirmed a date. More than once Mourão affirmed that the government plans to bring a group of ambassadors from countries from different regions to the Amazon, not just representatives of Europeans.
