The president of the Butantan Institute, Dimas Covas, has just announced, in a press conference, the preliminary results of the tests of Coronavac, the Chinese vaccine from Sinovac-Biotech, in Brazil.
According to the study, 35% of the people tested experienced some mild side effect. The result, according to Covas, shows that Coronavac is the safest vaccine against Covid-19 among those that are in a more advanced stage of development.
According to Covas’ presentation, the most frequent symptom among those evaluated was pain at the injection site. About 18% of people reported the side effect.
Among those evaluated, 15% also reported headache, the second most common adverse reaction. Less than 5% of those examined had diarrhea, chills, and nausea.
According to Covas, there were no side effects of grade 3, the most serious. In total, 0.1% of those analyzed had a fever and no person had a body temperature above 38.5ºC.
“The Butantan vaccine is the safest in terms of side effects. In total, in the 12 thousand vaccines, it has an occurrence of side effects, which add up to 35%. Other vaccines [testadas no Brasil], none was less than 75% “.
José Medina, coordinator of the Covid-19 Contingency Center, said that Coronavac’s effectiveness cannot yet be measured.
“First, the vaccine produced neutralizing antibodies. Then he showed security. And now we await the result of effectiveness, which depends on the incidence in both groups: the control and the vaccinated one.
Coronavac is tested on 9,000 Brazilian volunteers, divided into 16 research centers in seven Brazilian states.
