RIO – Brazil registered 8,874 new cases and 195 new deaths from coronavirus this Sunday. As a result, 5,232,541 are infected and another 153,885 fatal in the country, according to a press release from the consortium.

The initiative is made up of O GLOBO, Extra, G1, Folha de S.Paulo, UOL and O Estado de S. Paulo and collects information from the state health secretariats disseminated daily until 8 pm.

However, the figures were hampered by “instability in the e-SUS system that prevented data extraction.” For this reason, Rondônia and Goiás did not publish bulletins. For a few weeks, the state of Minas Gerais has not published on Sundays. Also, the last update from Ceará is from first thing in the morning.

The moving average of deaths was 483. Throughout the week, this index was similar to that observed in early May, and is almost half of that observed between July and September, when the pandemic reached the peak of cases and deaths in Brazil.

The “7-day moving average” averages between the number of deaths for the day and the previous six. It is compared to an average of two weeks ago to indicate whether there is an uptrend, stability or a downtrend. The calculation is a statistical resource to be able to see the trend of the data, drowning out the “noise” caused on weekends, when the notification of deaths due to a shortage of shift employees is reduced.

Eighteen states showed a downward trend in the moving average of deaths: Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondônia , Roraima, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Tocantins.

There was an upward trend in two states: Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte. In addition to the Federal District, the index remained stable in six states: Alagoas, Espírito Santo, Maranhão, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro and Sergipe.

The Ministry of Health reports that there were 10,982 new infections and 230 new deaths in the country. However, it reported that there was a problem updating the system data in Rondônia, Perambuco, Paraíba and Goiás. “Datasus is working to solve the problem. The data is kept and will be updated in the bulletin tomorrow,” says the note.

Also according to the federal government, there are 5,235,344 infected by Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic and 153,905 deaths.

Political dispute

The search for a cure for Covid-19 this week was rocked by a political confrontation between São Paulo Governor João Doria (PSDB) and President Jair Bolsonaro (no party). Doria said last Thursday that the vaccine against the new coronavirus will be mandatory in the state, but the president said the next day that this measure can only be taken with the consent of the federal government.

Without directly citing Doria or São Paulo, Bolsonaro highlighted excerpts from two laws on his social media. Law 13,979, proposed and sanctioned by the president himself this year, determines that mandatory vaccination may be carried out. Bolsonaro, however, emphasized the term “could”, conditionally.

The other law cited by the President is Law 6.259 of 1975, which deals with the National Immunization Program (PNI). Bolsonaro highlighted an extract that establishes that the program is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health and that state governments “can propose complementary legislative measures”, but only with “the prior consent of the Ministry of Health.”

On Thursday, the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass) asked, in a letter sent to the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, that the federal government buy doses of the Chinese coronavirus vaccine, ConoraVac, produced in Brazil together with the Butantan Institute. , and include it in the PNI. The initiative does not have the support of Pazuello. João Doria expects a transfer from the ministry to buy 60 million doses of the immunizer.

CoronaVac is in the final phase of testing with volunteers. So far, studies have shown no significant adverse effects from the vaccine and 6 million doses of the immunizer are expected to arrive at the Butantan Institute by the end of this month, ready for use, if the immunizer receives approval from Anvisa.
