Seven months after the confirmation of the first case of Covid-19 in Brazil, only six cities remain without confirmed cases of the disease. Four of them are in Minas Gerais: Botumirim, in the North Region; Cedro do Abaeté, in the Central Region; Pedro Teixeira, in the Zona da Mata, and São Thomé das Letras, in the south of the state.

Little Laranjal, with just over 6,000 inhabitants, is the only city in Paraná free of coronavirus. The city does not have a hospital and, to avoid contagion, sanitary measures were reinforced, even for the 300 residents who travel 100 km, every day, to work in another municipality.

In southern Brazil, in addition to Laranjal, a city in the state did not register the disease. Most of the 4,000 inhabitants of Cerro Branco live in the countryside. Health workers, sound cars and a radio give guidance on Covid-19.

The city also installed sanitary barriers, which operate 24 hours a day, at the entrances that give access to the municipality. The reopening ended in court and, on Thursday (15), a new decision determined that the city should receive tourists again.
“The city can only receive 20% of the capacity of beds available in the municipality. We don’t have a hospital here in the city. Only this UBS, which is a basic unit of care. We don’t have an ICU bed, we don’t have a respirator. We only have one respirator just to transport the patient, ”said the city’s Sanitary Surveillance coordinator.
According to the infectologist Unaí Tupinambás, professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the physical and demographic characteristics of these places and the actions of government officials end up preventing the registration of cases.

“They are places that have a low population density. Of course, that alone wouldn’t be enough, local managers’ choices make all the difference. We have seen this all over the world. When the manager has a very tough stance on the issue of these non-pharmacological measures, such as social distance, the use of a mask and avoiding crowds, we have seen that there is a lot of success in this confrontation ”, he said.
