President Jair Bolsonaro signed on Tuesday (13) the decree that extends until December the program that allows companies to proportionally reduce, or suspend, the hours and wages of employees.

The Emergency Benefit for Preservation of Employment and Income (BEM) was created during the new coronavirus pandemic and was instituted with an interim measure in April. The emergency benefit had already gone through two extensions.

This Wednesday (14), the decree was published in the “Official Gazette”. The deadline would end this month, however, Economy Minister Paulo Guedes had already reported on the extension.

The measures are only valid for the duration of the state of public calamity. Therefore, the agreements are expected to close on December 31, 2020.

“Given the current scenario of social and economic crisis, and with the continuation of restrictive measures of social isolation, it is necessary to extend, once again, the maximum term of validity of the agreements,” reports material released by the Planalto Palace in last Tuesday (13).

“This action will allow companies in a vulnerable situation to continue surviving this period and, in this way, preserve employment and project a better economic recovery,” says the government.
