Champion of the Brazilian Cup in 2005, the coach seeks to rediscover a peak moment, but in recent years he fought more against relegation
On the same Sunday (11) that marked the 2-1 defeat against Ceará, in a duel valid for the 15th round of Brasileirão in which they played a good part of the time with one more man, Corinthians announced the hiring of a new coach: Vagner Mancini, until then at Atlético-GO, was chosen to take the reins to replace interim Dyego Coelho and signed a contract until the end of 2021.

At the age of 53, Mancini arrived at Neo Química Arena to remedy the chaos in which Alvinegro Paulista settled in this 2020 season: the team did not fit under the command of Tiago Nunes, great hope of the fans and the board to make the team play more attractive football, and the results worsened in the short period under Dyego Coelho. Today, Corinthians occupy the relegation zone for the first time in eight years. The mission of the new coach is precisely to give more peace of mind and make the positive results reappear.
But how were Mancini’s previous passes with Brazilian clubs, how many giants of our soccer has he trained, how many titles does he have on his resume, and how many times has he felt the discomfort of relegation? See a brief summary of the career of the new Corinthians manager.
Paulista: meteoric start and distant summit
Shortly after hanging up his boots as a player, Vagner Mancini replaced Paulista in 2004. However, it was the following year that he appeared with great prominence on the national scene to lead the Jundiaí team to the 2005 Brazil Cup, by beating the Fluminense favorite. To this day, this is his main achievement.
Grêmio: lightning in the “first giant”
After leaving Paulista, Mancini coached Al Nasr from the United Arab Emirates, but returned to Brazil in early 2008 for his first big chance to be a giant of our soccer. But the play as coach of Grêmio, a club that he also defended as a player years before, was as short as it was controversial.
Mancini played only six official matches in the technical area of Tricolor Gaúcho and was not defeated in any of them: there were four wins and two draws. However, he had disagreements with the board and was fired the day before receiving his family to move permanently to Porto Alegre.

The wound of the shortened history in Grêmio was still open when Mancini arrived at Vitória, also in 2008, in the first of his three spells at the Bahian club. Right away, he won the state championship and pinned the former team: “I’m doing the right thing. What happened in Grêmio is a turning point, ”he said. The rojinegros finished the Brasileirão that year in tenth place.
In 2009, however, he left Leão in the middle of the Bahia Championship to accept a proposal from Santos, but accumulated historically bitter results – such as the defeat of Corinthians by Ronaldo Fenómeno in the state decision, in addition to the surprising elimination in the Cup. of Brazil before CSA. Fired, he returned that year to Vitória (who had beaten Santos 2-6 in their last match with Peixe) and made the Bahian team finish Serie A in a good 13th position.
His third spell at Barradão was also positive, a few years later: he took the team back to the football elite, with third place in Serie B in 2015, and in 2016 he won another Bahian title for the club. At the Brasileirão, however, the good moment did not hold and Mancini was sacked as the club struggled to escape relegation, a goal he achieved with great difficulty, but without Mancini.
In 2018, the coach returns to Barradão and manages to free the team from relegation, but the following year he is fired on the way to the fall of the rojinegros to Serie B.
Vasco: the third giant and another fast pass
In an optimistic Basque with the return to the first division, Vagner Mancini was the name chosen by the Cruzmaltina board of directors for 2010. But the defeats in the state and the poor performance ended up decreeing his departure after 18 games (10 wins, four ties and the same number). defeats).
Guaraní: the first descent
Also in 2010, Vagner Mancini was announced by the Guarani and he did not do well: in 63 games he won only 18, drew 18 more and was defeated 27 times taking into account all the tournaments played. In Brasileirão, Bugre was demoted when he finished in 18th position and the manager left the club at the end of that season.
Ceará: sigh and springboard
Mancini assumed command of Ceará in 2011 and won, that same year, the Ceará Championship. The main achievement, however, was in the Copa do Brasil, where Vozão reached the semifinals after eliminating Flamengo in the previous phases. The good work caught the attention of Cruzeiro, who at that time was fighting against relegation with Ceará himself at Brasileirão.
Cruzeiro: relief, historical defeat and revolt

In that 2011, Cruzeiro fought until the end to escape relegation on the last day of Brasileirão. And the celestial crowd went from hell, so feared, to an unimaginable paradise: on the last day, the 6-1 victory over archrival Atlético freed Raposa from the fall and entered the history of the Minas Gerais classic.
However, in the following year the results did not satisfy Mancini: he was eliminated from the state by América, and from the Copa do Brasil by Athletico-PR (then Atlético-PR), the coach resigned. For Cruzeiro, there were 30 wins, seven draws and nine losses.
Sport: weak roar on Retiro Island
Mancini came to a Sport full of optimistic expectations in 2012, but after eight losses and only three wins in 16 games he was fired.
Náutico y Atlético: nightmare, recovery and surprise
Chosen to be the coach of Náutico in 2013, Mancini did not like the leaders of the Pernambuco club and, after 14 games (nine wins and five losses), he was fired.

That same year, he was appointed coach of Atlético Paranaense and found another moment of growth: he took the rojinegros out of the relegation zone of Brasileirão and ended that campaign in third place, classifying the people of Paraná to the Libertadores. In addition, he was runner-up in the Brazilian Cup, losing the final to Flamengo. Surprisingly, Atlético decided not to renew his contract.
Botafogo: chaos and unforgettable descent

In April 2014, Mancini was chosen to lead Botafogo, the fifth Brazilian giant of his career. But with the Alvinegro full of financial problems, which even led to the departure of players like Emerson Sheik and Edílson, relegation to Serie B was sanctioned at the end of that season. In 42 games there were only 10 wins and 25 incredible losses.
Chapecoense: reconstruction and special moments

After his third spell in Vitória, Mancini arrived at Chapecoense in 2017, a few months after the air disaster that killed most of the club’s players in 2016, including coach Caio Júnior. In the Chape, Mancini was in the technical area in the solidarity friendly against Barcelona, at the Camp Nou, and won the title of Santa Catarina. A five-game winless series at Brasileirão, however, decreed his dismissal. For Chape, there were 43 games, 20 wins, nine draws and 14 losses. Where would Mancini return to in 2017? Precisely for Vitória.
São Paulo: from coach to coach

In 2019, after his last stage (so far) in Vitória, Mancini arrived in São Paulo not to occupy the position of coach, which surprised many people. But after the resignation of André Jardine, the then technical coordinator held the position of commander of the Tricolor on an interim basis while Cuca, who was recovering from health problems, could not take over the team. In nine games, he won three, tied four and lost two.
Mancini left São Paulo in the last half of that season. After Cuca’s resignation, the expectation was that he would once again be the club’s coach, but the managers’ option was to hire Fernando Diniz.

It is still the year 2019 and Mancini takes command of Atlético-MG in the last half of the season, but after four victories, five draws and four defeats in 13 games – and a 13th position in the Brazilian Championship – the Minas club Gerais chose not to renew the coach’s bail for 2020.
Atlético-GO: a new springboard

In June 2020, Atlético-GO announced Vagner Mancini as coach and the 53-year-old had been doing a commendable job. He reached the round of 16, after eliminating Fluminense, and at Brasileirão he left the team in 12th place, with 18 points won. In 18 games, there were five wins, six draws and seven losses.
The challenge now will be Corinthians. Another giant that bets on Mancini in a difficult moment. Now imagine what the ending balance will be like.
Titles won by Vagner Mancini: Copa do Brasil (2005), Bahia Championship (2008, 2016), Ceará Championship (2011), Santa Catarina Championship (2017).
