VATICAN, OCT 11 (ANSA) – Pope Francis confirmed that he called Father Júlio Lancellotti on Saturday night (10) and stressed that the religious is a true “messenger of God”.
“Last night I managed to call an elderly Italian priest, a young missionary in Brazil, but always working with the excluded, with the poor,” recalled the Pontiff.
Lancellotti has been Episcopal Vicar of the Pastoral do Povo da Rua, of the Archdiocese of São Paulo, and has been doing social work to help the homeless for 36 years. In recent months, he has dedicated himself to reducing the impact of the new coronavirus among the most vulnerable population.
“[Ele] he lives that old age in peace: he spent his life with the poor. This is our Mother Church, this is the messenger of God, who goes to the crossroads of the roads ”, he said.
Francisco also stressed that following this path imposes a condition: to wear a wedding dress, which symbolizes the mercy that God gives us freely, that is, grace.
Without grace, you cannot take a step forward in the Christian life.
Everything is grace. It is not enough to accept the invitation to follow the Lord, it is necessary to be available for a path of conversion, which changes the heart, ”the Holy Father explained.
This Saturday (10), Francisco called Lancellotti to express his closeness to the homeless population in this pandemic period of the new coronavirus (Sars-CoV-2).
In the conversation, the Argentine expressed his simplicity after seeing the photos of the campaign carried out by the vulnerable.
The priest was recently subjected to threats after state deputy Arthur do Val, known as “Mamãe Falei”, launched a smear campaign against Lancellotti. (ANSA)
