This Friday (9), the Ministry of Health minimized the procedures for obtaining and distributing the Coronavac vaccine, an association between the government of São Paulo and the Chinese Sinovac, and affirmed that they are no more advanced than the other vaccines analyzed by the Federal government.
The executive secretary of the portfolio said that “you cannot buy what does not exist.”
The position was announced the same day that Governor João Doria (PSDB) pressed the federal government for a response on the association. Doria stated that he already has a “plan B” to distribute to other states, if he does not close a partnership with the federal government.
Doria had intended to add Coronavac to the federal immunization plan, but has yet to secure a Health Ministry position.
“Our understandings with the state of São Paulo, with the Butantan Institute, go at the same pace as the bilateral understandings with the laboratories with which we are in contact,” said the executive secretary of the Ministry of Health, Elcio Franco.
Franco repeated the version widely circulated by the folder that priority will be given to the first vaccine that is ready, that proves to be reliable, that is offered in large quantities to the Brazilian population and that has a good price.
“The vaccine that is prepared first will definitely be an option to buy. According to Brazilian law, I cannot buy what does not exist ”, said the executive secretary, who later explained that the contract was maintained.
“So, just like Butantan, the other laboratories that we look for to have knowledge and access to safe and effective vaccines are in the same role.”
On the other hand, Franco recalled that Coronavac is in phase 3 of clinical tests and that, therefore, it can become a candidate, if its registration is approved by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency).
The executive secretary also recalled that there is already a guarantee of 140 million doses of a vaccine against Covid-19 for the first half of next year.
Of this total, 100 million are the result of a closed alliance with the AstraZeneca laboratory, in alliance with the University of Oxford, through Fiocruz.
The other 40 million doses refer to the Brazilian adherence to the Covax Facility initiative, led by the WHO (World Health Organization). Brazil intends to immunize 10% of the Brazilian population with adherence to this mechanism.
“We continue in bilateral contacts not only with the Butantan Institute, the coronavac, but also with other national institutes that seek alliances with international laboratories. We seek within this portfolio to open the opportunity to open access to a safe and effective vaccine as soon as possible” .
