The world registered 350,766 cases of Covid-19 on Friday (9), according to the World Health Organization (WHO), setting a new record for daily cases since the beginning of the pandemic. The earlier trademark was registered the day before, on Thursday (8).
The record for this Friday is the third of October: on the 2nd 330,340 daily cases were registered and on the 8th, 338,779.
In Friday’s bulletin, the WHO recorded 6,339 deaths worldwide. The 24-hour death record was set on April 17, when the world had 12,393 deaths from Covid.
According to the WHO, the increase in the number of cases is driven by a new outbreak in Europe. While on Thursday the continent registered 96,996 cases in 24 hours, on Friday more than 109,000 new infections were registered, the highest number since the start of the pandemic.
In total, the world has more than 36 million confirmed cases and more than 1.5 million deaths in 235 countries since the pandemic began, according to the WHO.
At Friday’s press conference, WHO emergency director Mike Ryan called on European governments to curb the increase in cases.
“It is difficult to see many countries in Europe witnessing a rapid increase in cases, and governments must take decisive action to try to end transmission,” Ryan said.
On Thursday, the WHO warned that, as a region, Europe reported more daily cases than India, Brazil and the United States, countries with the highest number of deaths and cases from Covid-19.
