Lucky louise, 77-year-old American poet, won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature. The announcement was made this Thursday morning (8) by the Swedish Academy.
Without books published in Brazil, the New York author was awarded “for his unmistakable poetic voice that, with austere beauty, universalizes individual existence”, according to the institution.
Considered by many to be one of America’s most talented contemporary poets, Glück is known for her technical precision, sensitivity, and work on loneliness, family relationships, divorce, and death.
His early books focus on failed love affairs, disastrous family encounters, and existential despair. In later work, he continued to address issues such as disappointment, rejection, loss, and isolation.
His poetry is “characterized by a search for clarity,” often focusing on childhood, family life and close relationships with parents and siblings, the Academy said.

The organization highlighted its 2006 collection, “Avernus,” calling it “masterful” and “a visionary interpretation of the myth of Persephone’s descent into hell in the captivity of Hades, the god of death.”
Currently, the writer is a professor of English at Yale University in Connecticut (USA).

In 1993, Glück won a Pulitzer Prize for his book “The wild iris”. The work, a clear example of the dreamlike nature of his poetry, is set in a garden and imagines three voices: flowers speaking with a poet-gardener, the poet-gardener himself, and an omniscient god figure.
The author’s poems are also found in books, such as “Firstborn”, (1968), “The house in the marsh” (1975), “The garden” (1976), “Descending figure” (1980), “The triumph of Achilles “(1985) and” Ararat “(1990).
His highlights from this decade are “Faithful and Virtuous Night” (2014), winner of the National Book Award, and “Poems 1962-2012” (2012), which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

The New York Times critic William Logan describes Glück’s writing as “the logical result of a certain kind of adjective-hungry confessional verse, reduced to a nervous set of verbs, intense, almost out of date. His poems are obscure, it is hard to look away from them. ”
With the victory of Louise Glück, the Nobel Prize already has four women awarded this year. The first was Andrea Ghez, who shared the award with two scientists for their research on black holes. Additionally, Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of Crispr, a genome editing method.

Since 1901, there have been 117 recipients of 113 awards. That’s because in four of them, two names were announced as winners in the same year. To date, no one has been awarded more than once.
Rudyard Kipling was the youngest winner of the award. In 1907, when he was appointed, he was 41 years old.
The oldest was Doris Lessing, who was 88 years old when she was honored in 2007.

The Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to only 16 women out of a hundred men since its creation in 1901. Before Louise, the last of them had been Olga Tokarczuk, in 2018.

This year, the prize for each of the Nobel categories is SEK 10 million (around R $ 6.3 million).
The medical degree was the first to be announced, in the second (5), for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus. The prize in Physics, launched on Tuesday (6), went to research on black holes. (see video below).
On Wednesday (7), the Chemistry award was announced for the discovery of Crispr, a genome editing method.
The Peace Prize will be awarded this Friday (9). The award in Economics will be announced next Monday (12). See schedule:
