Five merchandise shelf towers fell and at least eight people were injured; firefighters continue to search for victims
The fall of five giant shelf towers in a supermarket in São Luiz, Maranhão, killed an employee and left at least eight other people injured on Friday night (2). The accident occurred around 8 p.m. and was registered by the local security circuit.
The names of the fatal victim and those injured were not released. In the videos that circulate on the internet, it is possible to see the exact moment when the innumerable metallic structures begin to fall into a kind of domino effect. At the time of the accident, there was an intense movement of customers. There is still no information on what caused the collapse, but it is suspected that an accident with a forklift may have caused one of the gondolas to fall, causing a domino effect, hitting almost half of the first line of the supermarket.
Another hypothesis, according to those present at the place, is that a shelf would swing with the supposed excess weight and that a forklift operator would have tried to remove a block of pallets, without time to avoid the tragedy.

The state government said that the search work for victims carried out by the Fire Department continues on Saturday morning (3) and will only make the data available after all families are informed about the situation of the victims. At the end of the rescue, there will be an official statement, which is expected to take place today.
According to the Fire Department shortly after the accident, there was a short circuit beginning. Due to the darkness and the amount of debris, rescue teams have adopted the tactic of listening to whether mobile phones are ringing to reach potential victims who have not yet been rescued.

Shortly after the accident, the governor of Maranhão reported that he had ordered the commander of the Fire Department to dedicate himself fully to the accident, to provide relief and assistance to the victims. The mayor of São Luís, Edivaldo Holanda Júnior (PDT), declared through a social network that he sent ambulances from Samu and sent medical teams to the Socorrão I and II hospitals, the Children’s Hospital and the 24-hour Unit in the Rural Zone to receive the injured.
