In mid-July, Jorge Jesús decided to leave Flamengo and return to Benfica. And it is that, in an interview granted to the Portuguese television “TVI”, the technician returned to speak of his glorious stay in the Rio de Janeiro club, revealing the main factor that motivated him to return to his country: the pandemic. In addition, he left the future open, without sacramenting that he will end his career on Portuguese soil.
“There were factors that led me to make this decision. First, the pandemic. Second, the project that the president of Benfica presented to me. I worked with him for six years, he is the president who knows me best and the president who knows me best. He presented a winning, high-dimension Project. I thought I would stay one more year in Brazil and only he could convince me, “he said.
Jorge Jesus stressed that his good relationship with Benfica’s agent, Luís Filipe Vieira, also influenced him to embrace the project presented by the Encarnados, who were eliminated early from the Champions League, before the group stage.
Mister once again commented on the ambition to win the Club World Cup, something he hit the post last season with Flamengo. In that line of response, he spoke about his future.
“I still have to win a Champions League and be world champion. With Flamengo he was close, we lost the final with Liverpool. I will never forget Brazil. And I cannot say today that I will finish my career in Portugal. Am I going abroad again? It’s my life, my career, you never know ”, he declared.
In total, there were 43 victories, ten draws and four defeats for Jesús with Flamengo, with the titles of Brasileirão and Libertadores in 2019, and Recopa Sul-Americana, Supercopa do Brasil and Carioca this season.
