Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist of the WHO (World Health Organization) admitted today that the organization can approve a vaccine that is 50% effective.

Swaminathan also explained that the effectiveness of the vaccine is not the only criterion taken into account. “As you know, there are confidence intervals and these intervals are not that wide,” he said.
According to her, the ideal scenario is a vaccine that has a 30% confidence interval. “A vaccine with less than that may not be very effective,” said the doctor.
The WHO chief scientist also explained that the institution wants “to have months to evaluate the safety” of a possible vaccine.
The doctor also said that there may be a scenario with two vaccines, one that could be used for “prevention” and a second to “control outbreaks.”
