The Emmy Awards were the first major event of the awards season to take place during the new coronavirus pandemic. Although the Golden Globe and the Oscar were saved from the effects of the quarantine, having happened in person even in 2020, the Emmy had to comply with strict hygiene protocols in order to award the best series and programs on American television.
In 2019, the Emmy innovated by not having a host. However, with the social distance measures, the accolade was again held with a master of ceremonies, comedian Jimmy Kimmel. In its opening monologue, the broadcast used archive footage from other editions showing stars and stars like Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss in the audience before revealing that the event was taking place in an empty auditorium. “Exactly like my graduation,” joked the comedian.
Kimmel did not shy away from the topic of the pandemic in his jokes: “It is better to present this award than symptoms,” he said at first, and even criticized himself: “It may seem useless and unnecessary to give awards in the middle of a pandemic, but do you know that it also is it useless and unnecessary? Give awards at any other time of the year. What we are going to do is not necessary, but it is fun ”.
During the ceremony, Kimmel spoke again about the pandemic, but qualifying the issue with a slightly more political tone: the US elections are held in less than two months. “Watchmen is a very realistic series, in addition to the part where they show people from inland Oklahoma wearing a mask,” he joked about the fact that many inhabitants of the southern states of the United States refuse to wear a mask during the pandemic. “Of course we don’t have an audience, this is Emmy, not the Trump rally,” he said.
Some attractions, however, were present, such as Jennifer Aniston, who presented the first category, for best actress in a comedy series, to Catherine O’Hara of Schitt’s Creek.
