The Secretary of Health of the State of São Paulo, Jean Gorinchteyn said today that he hopes to have 100 million doses of the novel coronavirus vaccine by May next year. The statement was made during an interview with CNN Brazil.

Earlier, Governor João Doria announced that 5 million doses of Coronavac should arrive in October, and by December the number will reach 46 million. The covid-19 vaccine is being developed by the Butantan Institute in association with the Chinese company Sinovac Biotech.

The secretary added that, in addition to the doses already announced by Doria, more doses are expected to arrive in the first months of 2021. “We will have 15 million more for the first quarter, adding 61 million, and by May we will have a total of 100 million . dose, ”he said.

“And so we will begin in December, or at the latest in January, the vaccination,” he added.

He said that vaccination should be done in two doses, so it must be considered that 100 million doses will be applied to 50 million people.

“This vaccine is being evaluated by a technical chamber and is likely to follow the same pattern as vaccination against influenza. Therefore, priority groups that are at risk of developing the most severe forms of the disease will go first.”

When asked if the doses will be restricted to the state of São Paulo, he answered no. “This will be oriented within the Unified Health System for all Brazilians. That is why we are counting on the support of the Ministry of Health so that we can vaccinate more and more Brazilians.”
