The piece was installed in a 1,300-square-meter green area of the crematorium and Cemitério da Penitência, in the Caju neighborhood, the city’s waterfront.
In total, the work has space for 4 thousand names and took a week to assemble. This Sunday morning, 30 families will participate in the inauguration and honor their families.
The monument is part of the celebrations of the movement ‘The world united by life’, which takes place in more than 30 countries, to celebrate life.
The architectural project, whose conception began in June and involved about 50 professionals from different states and areas of activity, was donated by Coletivo Crisa Santos Arquitetos to the management of the Cemitério da Penitência, which invested R $ 300 thousand in the execution of the play.
The architect Crisa Santos, author of the work, had the idea of building the piece at the height of the pandemic after visiting several cemeteries in the country.
He has a specialization in neuroscience from the PUC / RS and has been studying the behavior of mourners for ten years, in collaboration with doctors, psychologists and other specialists.
The architect explains that “the idealization of the outdoor work was to offer a place where visitors can meditate and connect with those who left. This helps redefine death, especially in the pandemic, which made goodbyes unviable. ”
This Saturday (19) Rio de Janeiro reached 17,634 deaths and more than 250 thousand cases of the disease. Only in the municipality of Rio there are almost 100,000 cases of Covid-19.
Families who want to have the name of their relatives on the monument must present the death certificate with the cause of death from Covid-19 and pay a fee of R $ 125.

The administrator of the cemetery, Alberto Brenner Júnior, adds that the memorial extends to the families of Rio de Janeiro, regardless of the place where they were buried.
“We are going to welcome all the people who wanted to know the work and also be part of it,” he said.
Funeral and cemetery workers will also be honored. According to Brenner Jr., “they were ‘warriors’, true heroes, as they dedicated themselves to understanding the feelings of the families, to welcoming them with affection and respect, even abdicating living with their families, since they needed to preserve them. ”
