President Jair Bolsonaro participated this Saturday morning (19) in the inauguration of an evangelical convention that was attended by approximately 850 people, according to information from the organization.

At the event, Bolsonaro said he expected Brazil to resume normalcy in 2020, following the impacts of the new coronavirus pandemic. The country has more than 135 thousand deaths from covid-19 and almost 4.5 million confirmed cases.

The convention was promoted by the Assembly of God in the Cathedral of Baleia, as the national headquarters of the Ministry of the Assemblies of God of Madureira is called, in Brasilia. The meeting was closed to the public and the press, and only pastors and church workers were allowed to attend. The inauguration was broadcast by TV Brasil.

The cathedral has capacity for 4,000 people. Due to the pandemic, the organization restricted the capacity to a thousand people, but not all those registered attended. Also according to the organizers, the rules established by the Federal District government for events of this type were followed, including the separation of seats to maintain social distance.

Through the broadcast, it could be seen that the president was wearing a mask, but on occasions he removed the protection to take pictures and speak with the audience present. He also shook hands with the host, Bishop Manoel Ferreira.

A day after saying that “staying home” preached by experts as a way to contain the spread of the disease was “small talk” and “for the weak,” Bolsonaro said he couldn’t “hide in a palace” in the middle of the crisis. sanitary.

Although he declares himself a Catholic, the president has a close relationship with pastors and evangelical churches. First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro attends Igreja Atitude, in Rio. Three members of the first echelon of the government are pastors: Minister Damares Alves (Women, Family and Human Rights) and Ministers André Mendonça (Justice and Public Security) and Milton Ribeiro (Education).
