A priest was stabbed and killed this Tuesday (15) by a homeless man in a square in the city of Como, in northern Italy. The information is that he is Tunisian and had mental problems. According to local police, Dom Roberto Malgesini, 51, was stabbed in the morning in Piazza San Rocco in the morning. The Tunisian turned himself in to the police after the crime.
Malgesini was known in Como for his commitment to those most in need in the city. The priest brought breakfast to the homeless and attended to some of their needs. The religious lived a few steps from the place where he was murdered.
Police said the priest was killed shortly after his breakfast distribution round began. Authorities believe that Malgesini knew the murderer, who was a homeless man attended by the priest.
The mayor of Como, Mario Landriscina, announced that he will declare an official duel in the city for the death of Malgesini. The local cathedral will pray a rosary in his honor.
The death of the religious took the migrants by surprise and many cried in front of the parish in San Rocco Square, where Malgesini was assassinated.
“He was like a father to me. When I arrived from Romania, alone, homeless and without work, he was the first to help me, then I found work, but I was always in contact with him. He did not deserve to die like that, I hope there is justice “Said Gabriel Nastase, 36.
The governor of the Lombardy region, Attilio Fontana, regretted the death of the priest and recalled that Malgesini is “a great example for everyone.”
At a rally in Bondeno, in the Emilia-Romagna region, former Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini commented on the case.
“At 7 in the morning, a parish priest was stabbed to death by one of the illegal immigrants who are undocumented in this country and who should be sent home. Dom Roberto stopped living because there was one who had no right to be in Italy, ”said Salvini.
The city of Como experienced a similar event in January 1999. In Ponte Chiasso, the parish priest Renzo Beretta was stabbed to death by a migrant he hosted. (ANSA).
